Samsung is reportedly developing a system to rival Android Auto and CarPlay, marking the company's first foray into the in-car infotainment arena. While details remain scarce, this move signals Samsung's intent to expand its ecosystem and directly compete with established players in the automotive technology space. Depending on how this initiative is rolled out, it has the potential to fundamentally change the future of in-car connectivity and overall vehicle user experience.
This would be the first time we’ve heard any such plans from Samsung to challenge Android Auto and CarPlay. Given that the scope and details of Samsung’s proposed system aren’t public yet, it’s hard to compare the two approaches.
While full details remain unclear, industry analysts believe that Samsung will be able to promote its current DeX platform. This would at least give users a consistent, desktop-like experience across different vehicle infotainment screens.
The company could integrate its Bixby voice assistant for hands-free control. This would give drivers the flexibility to control their navigation, media, and communications.
There is plenty that is not clear about Samsung’s intentions. Its official name, expected release date, and whether it will work with only select car models or a wider range are still cloaked in secrecy.
As of now, Samsung has not officially acknowledged anything on this project yet. Stay tuned. Additional details will undoubtedly come out as development continues.
Whether or not Samsung succeeds in its effort will depend on a number of factors. Seamless integration with vehicles, easy to use interface, and strong functionality must be achieved.
As with EVs, partnerships with automakers will be key to better adoption at scale. Converting the millions of cars already on the road today that are firmly rooted in Android Auto and CarPlay will be the real test.
