Imagine yourself walking down the busy streets of Lagos. Rather than cruising around in the hottest new foreign SUV, you’re doing it in your favorite old-to-you Toyota Corolla. The same old Toyota Corolla that’s been in the family for a generation. Now, picture that same Corolla—all of a sudden, boosted with a sleek, modern, intuitive, easy-to-use infotainment system, courtesy of your Samsung phone. That’s the potential of Auto DeX and it might be larger than you imagine with African drivers.

Democratizing In-Car Tech In Africa?

Let’s face it, elaborate in-car systems are usually available only on newer, pricier vehicles. In most of Africa, where used or second-hand imported vehicles rule the roads, accessing these features is a privilege. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered, but don’t use them much. Part of the reason is that many of the vehicles currently on the road are old and incompatible.

Auto DeX, new technology boasting compatibility with more than 8,500 cars from more than 120 brands, may sidestep this issue. Think about it: your older car, instantly transformed into a smart car, simply by plugging in your phone.

This isn’t just some convenience feature. Improved accessibility can save lives. It’s paving the way to democratizing access to technology that can enhance safety, navigation and entertainment for a broader range of drivers. It's about leveling the playing field.

Local Apps, Local Languages Matter

Compatibility is only half the battle. Perhaps the biggest game-changer will be the extent to which Auto DeX delivers on the unique needs of African drivers. Will it support local languages? Will it work smoothly alongside existing and widely-used ride-hailing applications like Bolt? Can it seamlessly integrate with local navigation apps that really get the feel of African roads?

This is where Samsung has a truly massive opportunity. Engaging developers across Africa allows the co-creation of an ecosystem of apps. These apps will be incredibly connected to the local market. Imagine a digital navigation app that avoids Nairobi’s most congested traffic chokepoints with ease. Now, picture this complete reality with a music streaming service dedicated to the most popular Afrobeat tracks!

The potential here is immense. Now imagine the motivated, diverse innovators that run from Mombasa to Kigali to Lagos, all eager to create the next unicorn or solution to the continent’s challenges. We believe that Auto DeX can be the platform that enables them to build cutting-edge solutions that African drivers truly desire.

Samsung Must Prioritize Our Needs

This is where Samsung’s close partnership with Google becomes very interesting. Will Google allow Samsung to go so far as to customize Android Auto for entirely different markets such as Africa? Or will Auto DeX end up just being another cookie cutter product, devoid of the local ingredients that make all the difference between success and failure.

So, I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit haphazardly optimistic. The leaked screenshots of Auto DeX are very exciting indeed! Its familiar interface and promise of being able to run directly on a phone excite users. The app taskbar, the nav bar, the widget … it all makes such sense, separating work and play, encouraging exploration.

Ultimately, Auto DeX's success in Africa will depend on Samsung's commitment to understanding and addressing the needs of African drivers. To do this, they need to meaningfully consult with local developers, seek detailed input, and position in-demand features to the top of the queue.

This engagement goes far beyond simply selling more phones. It creates not only empowered communities but fuels innovation. It’s not just about getting technology into people’s hands who can afford a fancy car or a new enough car to benefit from this technology. We need to make sure that the next generation of African drivers has the same tools available to them as their peers in the developed world. Let’s send them the tools they need to thrive!

Samsung, are you listening? The opportunity is there. The potential is undeniable. Don't let it slip away.

The promise of Auto DeX isn't just about mirroring your phone screen in your car. It's about driving a new era of connected mobility across Africa. It’s about putting the right tools into the hands of America’s drivers, fostering local innovation, and overcoming today’s digital divide, one car at a time.
